Communication skills

Communication skills

Whether you work in the Public Sector, IT, Healthcare or Financial Services, communication skills are essential. No matter your role within your organisation, you will interact with colleagues, managers and external parties. Ensuring your professional relationships are the best they can be might just make the difference between good performance and great performance.

This is why we recommend training on communication skills to everyone.

Did you know?

  • Less than 2% of people have had any formal education on how to listen. Do you master the art of listening?
  • 42% of corporate emails are ignored. Are your emails being read?
  • The first 30 seconds of a presentation will decide how well it is going to go in the eyes of the audience. Do you deliver stellar presentations?

Below are some courses on communication skills we have delivered. If your needs are specific or if you require tailored courses, please contact us.

Cross-Cultural Communication

Duration:

1 Day

Overview:

Working in a new culture or with a team from a culture other than your own can be nothing short of a series of small challenges. All communication is cultural: it draws on ways we have learned to speak and give non-verbal messages. We do not always communicate the same way from day to day, since factors like beliefs, traditions, personal relationships and prior experiences all impact on how we interact with others.

Communication is interactive, so an important influence on its effectiveness is our relationship with others. The challenge is that even with all the good will in the world, miscommunication is likely to happen, especially when there are significant cultural differences between communicators. Miscommunication may lead to conflict, or aggravate conflict that already exists.
This course is designed to show participants how to avoid cultural pitfalls, as well as how to connect with others. The workshop will outline and demonstrate cross-cultural communication via examples of ideas, attitudes, and behaviours involving different variables. As their familiarity with different starting points increases, delegates will develop their awareness of the ways cultures operate in communication and conflict, and the ability to respond effectively to these differences.

Who Will Benefit:

This workshop is aimed at all those looking to improve their communication skills in a cross-cultural context to build more productive and successful relationships.

Course Objectives:

This course will enable participants to:

  • Identify and explain the four basic behavioural styles and the benefits and challenges of each
  • Describe Geert Hofstede’s four cultural dimensions and their impact on communication
  • Explain how time is viewed differently throughout the world and how to communicate expectations to those with a different outlook
  • Describe a model of feedback, communication and listening
  • Explain the importance of body language in the listening process
  • Demonstrate techniques for better listening when communicating with challenging
    speakers
  • Develop an Action Plan to improve communication skills.

Effective Communication

Duration:

1 Day

Overview:

Good communications deliver real rewards and results, both for individuals and the business. There is a significant difference between those who communicate well and those who do not. That difference can stand between success and failure, both in business, and personally.

It is therefore very useful to meet the challenge of communications head on, examining positive behaviours and critiquing existing methods. This course redirects and encourages changing behaviours by exploring and examining participants’ communications techniques and introducing changes in the way they interact with others. They will be encouraged to build confidence in their communications and develop different practices for addressing communications needs.

Who Will Benefit:

This workshop is aimed at all those looking to improve their communication skills, as well as their confidence, to build more productive and successful relationships.

Course Objectives:

This course will enable participants to:

  • Create more clear styles of communication
  • Use different techniques in different circumstances to get more positive responses
  • Understand their default communications and how these can be modified effectively
  • Build relationships and results through more effective communication methods
  • Apply their learning directly in the workplace.

Course Content:

The workshop covers:

  • Introductions – In this session the facilitator introduces the course and works with the delegates to help them set their own course objectives. Mapping these out helps identify the needs for better communication and behaviour changes.
  • A Vocal Exercise “Where are we now?” – At this stage delegates will undertake an exercise where existing communication habits will be observed with recommendations made. Each delegate will be given feedback by their colleagues to provide suggestions on what to work on during the day.
  • Social Styles – At this point participants will be facilitated to explore what their default communication style is and what this means in their communications. They will look at why it might create issues in the workplace.
  • Difficult Situations – Participants will be expected to work in groups identifying a maximum of four difficult communication scenarios with their suggested remedies. The trainer will support the teams’ findings, introducing the teams to tried and tested methodologies that alleviate and diffuse difficult situations quickly. Participants will be pleased to find that these will be user friendly and will adapt to sound natural.
  • Questioning Skills – The structure and delivery of intelligent questioning technique will be the focus of this session. Participants will understand how specific types of questions will allow for smoother communication and contribute effectively to dealing with difficult situations.
